Qasbah and medina walls
Tangier's Qasbah and medina walls are in crisis. Originally dating from pre Roman times, the walls have been built and rebuilt many times, but are now in dire need of professional structural remediation.
The following photos show, even to the casual observer, the degradation and looming crisis.
These photos are taken from just outside the walls at place de la Qasbah. The port is visible at the left.
The silhouetted people at the left provide perspective on the precarious tilt of the wall.
A detail image shows deep and widening cracks at the base of the wall.
The steep hillside appears to be slowly slumping into the sea far below --
acting to pull these and other cracks wider and wider.
